The short answer
Ryzen 5 9600X
$185For almost everyone. With an RTX 5070 at 1440p it gives the same 70 FPS as a 9800X3D that costs $264 more. It sits on AM5, so in a few years you can swap in something faster without touching the board.
CHECK PRICERyzen 7 9800X3D
$449If you play competitive shooters at 240 Hz or own an RTX 5080 or better. In esports titles it averages 604 FPS, nearly 150 more than the 9600X. Outside those two cases you are paying for something you will not see.
CHECK PRICERyzen 7 7800X3D
$367The cheap X3D. 568 FPS in esports titles, 6% behind the 9800X3D, for $82 less. It is sold by a third party on Amazon, not by Amazon. Look at who the seller is before you pay.
CHECK PRICECore i5-14600K
$250If you already own DDR4. LGA1700 boards exist for DDR4, and with a 32 GB DDR5 kit at around $392, reusing your memory matters more than the processor. Update the BIOS first: 13th and 14th generation chips needed a microcode patch for a voltage problem.

The 14 processors, cheapest first
Three frame-rate columns. The first two are with an RTX 5080 at 1080p, which is where the processor decides. The third is with an RTX 5070 at 1440p, which is closer to what people actually own.

FPS: our engine's estimates, not our own measurements. The average of five AAA games at high settings, native resolution, no upscaling. How far off the engine is
The last column is not a mistake
Seventy in all fourteen rows. With an RTX 5070 at 1440p the card runs out before any of these processors does, and the $157 one delivers the same as the $523 one. In AAA games at that resolution, changing the processor gets you zero frames.
There is a caveat. Our engine computes averages. It does not model stutter, and the lows are where a fast processor usually shows even when the average does not move. It also leaves out simulators and strategy games, the ones that lean hardest on the processor. If that is mostly what you play, trust a review with measurements over this table.
When an X3D pays off
Look at the esports column. There the graphics card has room to spare and the processor sets the ceiling: 604 FPS for the 9800X3D, 456 for the 9600X, 313 for the Ryzen 5 5600. If you have a 240 or 360 Hz monitor and play Counter-Strike 2 or Valorant, that difference is real. On a 144 Hz one you will not see it, because all fourteen clear 300.
The 9850X3D is the fastest in the table by very little: 613 FPS against 604, and it costs $35 more. Published reviews put it 3 to 4% ahead. Buy whichever is cheaper that day.
What the platform costs
This year the processor is the cheap part. A 9600X costs $185, but it needs an AM5 board (about $130) and DDR5 memory, and a 16 GB kit runs about $250. That is roughly $565 before the graphics card. The Core Ultra chips are in the same position: they only take DDR5.
That is why the 14th generation Intel chips are still on the list even though their socket will get nothing new. They are the only fast processors that run on the DDR4 you already have in a drawer.
Two we would not buy for gaming
The Ryzen 7 9700X costs $154 more than the 9600X and is 4% faster in games: 473 FPS against 456 in esports. It has eight cores instead of six, which shows when you edit video or compile. In games it does not.
The Core Ultra 9 285K, at $523, is the most expensive in the table and in games it trails the 9800X3D and also the Core i9-14900K, which is older and cheaper. It is very good at rendering. This page is about games.

Common questions
Is the Ryzen 7 9800X3D worth it over the Ryzen 5 9600X?
Only in two cases: you play competitive shooters on a 240 Hz or faster monitor, or you own an RTX 5080 or better. In esports titles it averages 604 FPS against 456. With an RTX 5070 at 1440p both deliver 70 FPS in AAA games, and the $264 difference does more good spent on the graphics card.
Do I need a new CPU for an RTX 5070?
If you play at 1440p, almost certainly not. Even a Ryzen 5 5600 from 2022 gives the same 70 FPS in AAA games with that card. At 1080p it shows: the same 5600 stops at 93 FPS where a 9600X does 97, and a Ryzen 5 3600 drops to 85.
Intel or AMD for gaming in 2026?
AMD if you are building from scratch: AM5 has the fastest gaming processors and will take the ones still to come. Intel makes sense in one specific case: if you already own DDR4 memory, a Core i5-14600K on a DDR4 board saves you from buying DDR5, which is the most expensive line on the list today.
