The short answer
At 1080p, 8 GB is still enough. At 1440p it no longer is: three of the five AAA games we use ask for more than 8 GB on high settings. At 4K you need 16.
Whether the memory is worth paying for depends on what you are charged. $73 on the RX 9060 XT, yes. $240 on the RTX 5060 Ti, no, because that money gets you to a faster card that also has 16 GB.
How much memory each game asks for
| Game | 1080p | 1440p | 4K |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hogwarts Legacy | 8.0 GB | 9.7 GB | 14.7 GB |
| Alan Wake 2 | 7.5 GB | 9.1 GB | 13.8 GB |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 7.0 GB | 8.5 GB | 12.9 GB |
| Call of Duty: Warzone | 6.0 GB | 7.3 GB | 11.0 GB |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 5.5 GB | 6.7 GB | 10.1 GB |
| Elden Ring | 5.0 GB | 6.1 GB | 9.2 GB |
| Counter-Strike 2 | 2.5 GB | 3.0 GB | 4.6 GB |
| Valorant | 1.5 GB | 1.8 GB | 2.8 GB |
High settings, no ray tracing. In colour, what does not fit in 8 GB. These are the figures our engine works with, not a measurement of each game on your machine: real usage shifts with every patch and with the texture setting.
What happens when you run short
The average frame rate drops only a little. In our engine the 8 GB RTX 5060 Ti loses 6% to the 16 GB one in Hogwarts Legacy at 1440p (49 FPS against 52) and 13% at 4K. Looked at that way, it seems not to matter.
It does matter, and this is where our model falls short. When a game does not fit in the card's memory, what you notice is hitching when you turn the camera and textures that load late or stay blurry. None of that shows in an average. Some games also lower texture quality on their own without telling you, and then the frame counter looks fine and the picture looks worse.

What we would buy
RTX 5060 · 8 GB
$380If you play at 1080p and do not plan to change monitor. It is the cheapest card that holds 60 FPS, and at that resolution 8 GB will not limit you on high settings.
CHECK PRICERX 9060 XT · 16 GB
$530If you want 16 GB for as little as possible. It is $73 more than the 8 GB version, and it is the only pair on this list where the extra memory is sensibly priced.
CHECK PRICERX 9070 GRE · 12 GB
$570For 1440p. 12 GB covers every game in the table at that resolution, and it does 62 FPS against 52 for the 8 GB RTX 5060 Ti, which costs only $21 less.
CHECK PRICERX 9070 · 16 GB
$700If you were heading for the 16 GB RTX 5060 Ti. It costs $89 less, has the same memory and does 70 FPS at 1440p instead of 53.

If you already own an 8 GB card
You do not have to replace it. The setting that takes up memory is texture quality, so lower it one step, from ultra to high or from high to medium. At 1080p the difference is hard to see and it is usually enough for the game to fit.
Two more things. Upscaling helps, because the game is drawn at a lower resolution. Frame generation does the opposite: it needs memory of its own, and on a card that is already tight it can make the hitching worse.
Do not confuse this with the system RAM, which is a different thing. That one is covered in is 8 GB of RAM enough?

Common questions
Is 8GB of VRAM enough for 1080p in 2026?
Yes, still. At 1080p on high settings the most demanding game on our list asks for exactly 8 GB and the rest ask for less. Push textures to ultra or turn on ray tracing and you will go over in some of them.
Is 12GB of VRAM enough for 1440p?
Yes. At 1440p the hungriest game stops at 9.7 GB, so a 12 GB card has room. At 4K it does not: three of the five AAA games go past 12 GB.
Is the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB worth it?
At the 30 September price, no. It costs $789, $240 more than the 8 GB one. An RX 9070 costs $700, has the same 16 GB and is about 30% faster at 1440p.
